A great deal has appeared in the press recently about this problem in Britain as we follow trends set in the USA. The medium and long-term implications of what has been termed as reaching 'epidemic proportions' are very concerning to the Health Service and the country as a whole.
According to the Dept of Health young people should be moderately physically active for at least an hour per day. The benefits of activity to children are better physical development and weight control, improved self-esteem and confidence, and less likelihood of taking up smoking.
In South Cambridgeshire a recent survey revealed only 41% of 13-15 year-olds exercised 3 or more times a week. Nationally 4 out of 10 boys and 6 out of 10 girls do not get the recommended minimum amount of exercise.
The "TEAM" project co-ordinated in South Cambs by Lynne Potter is a partnership between South Cambs District Council and the local Primary Care Trust aimed at increasing physical activity in selected groups of children between the ages of 9 and 11. Children and their parents are encouraged to take part in motivational activities and adjust their diets to help reduce weight.
