The figures from a Dept. of Health study (1996) show that only around 30% of adults in the UK take the recommended exercise (30 minutes moderate activity on 5 days per week). As well as the health benefits mentioned elsewhere on this site, the psycho-social benefits accruing to extra activity in older adults have also been noted:-
• Improved self-esteem, self-worth and confidence
• Greater opportunity for socialising and reducing isolation
• Greater independence and lower risk of injury
Activity in older groups needs to include specific exercises to improve mobility, balance, and strength. These can be combined with initiatives to prevent falls.
